Shadows
Somehow I ended up in the following chapter (Venom), so I'm ready, in advance, for Wednesday. Then I went back and read Shadows and while my thinking didn't align directly with where the chapter took us, I did think intently on my own perception of shadows.
I thought about times I've walking down dark streets in large cities and seen LARGE 'shadows' on the walls or flashing as cars drove by. It is frightening and feels a bit ominous. I thought about the way many horror films are shot primarily in darkness, with shadows adding to the effect because it's harder to see the images.
When I think of the shadow image; I think of blackness or void of light. I think of how it overtakes quickly as the sun falls. I think of how mischief and evil are partners to shadows and darkness. I think of the word "vulnerable".
I totally agree with James about how our continual search for significance leads to distractions and desperation as we wander 'farther and farther from home, convincing ourselves we're on the right track, until we finally arrive at the very state we've been fleeing from all along.'
I know there has been some 'discussion' about James style of writing, I will say...I love the way this book just gives a 'little' and then leaves you to 'grow that little' into something more.

Kim, I have to agree with you on both points. First, the shadows - when you think about it, we always picture evil "lurking" in the shadows yet the Bible clearly tells us that Satan can even appear as an angel in some instances. But I do think our mind correlates darkness with the unknown and the unknown with evil and hence, we think all the boogeymen live inside the shadows. Learning to look for evil in the light of day is the trick!
And I know this book is hard for some to read - everyone enjoys certain styles of writing and no one book will please everyone - but I find the author's style of writing to be like you do. He hints at something and I walk away and grow more and more of it in my mind throughout the day. I'm glad to find that this happens for you, as well.
