Echoes
...but when you look closer you see that really light is chasing shadow toward an empty tomb."
Man, that line gave me shivers! Here was death, coming for us all as it had since the beginning of man. Suddenly, Jesus arrives on the scene and death, as well as Satan, has no idea they are about to be trumped, once and for all. From what I've read, Satan wasn't really sure at first if Jesus was the messiah, an angel or just another man. He didn't know the answer to this question until he met him in the desert and did his best to tempt him. I wonder how Satan's life changed when he realized this was no ordinary man and not just another angel? Did he gasp? Scream? Go into hiding to plot his comeback? We're always thinking about how man reacted to the realization that Jesus was God in the flesh but I wonder how Satan reacted as well. Did he see the light chasing the shadow toward the tomb?
When I was young I attended a Lutheran church and one of the creeds we used to say had the line, "...He was crucified, dead and buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead and ascended into heaven..."
I never understood why he descended into hell. You'd think that would be the last place you'd find the Son of God hanging out, wouldn't you? I'm not sure I still really understand it all but, in my mind, I think it was so Jesus could not only understand what it was like to be human but also what it was like to be unsaved. Or maybe he just had some final business to take care of with the evil one.
In any case, I've always loved how Jesus went into a dark cave as a dead human and came out into the light of morning as a resurrected Savior. Dark turns into light. Death turns into life. The world turned upside down...

Now..let's try the real post.
For me one of the most important parts of my relationship with Jesus is understanding that He knew, from experience, total separation from God, in the form of hell.
He went for the keys and to remind satan that his reign was short lived. He went because that was part of the price paid...for the sins of the world. He went because if He hadn't...He couldn't be our savior.
I think about what it must have been like to be certain I was doing my Father's will...but so separated from the love that IS God.

That's a great visual... "He went for the keys." Yes, my understanding was that he went to hell to release the souls who had been awaiting his coming since the beginning of creation. But I could have it backwards.

Yes, indeed! Our world has been turned upside down and it will be turned upside right someday! Woohoo.

I think Satan knew that Jesus was the Christ from birth - thats why he had Herod kill all the firstborn children in an effort to stamp it out then....
alot of denominations believe that Jesus went to Hell to take all the sin that had been put upon Him.... also, kpjara, I believe the total separation from God the Father came when He was on the cross (the Father couldnt be near the sin, even look at it), not when/if Jesus went to Hell - thats my viewpoint though

KP: That IS a great visual about the keys! Love it!
Guys, thanks for the explanation about why He had to go to hell. I just never really got that part settled in my mind but now I really do feel better about it.
