Incredible Moment in a Storm

So far this has been my favorite of Gire's meditations... his description of Jesus rebuking the storm ..."as if speaking to unruly children, playing too loudly in the house" gives me a visual, not only of Jesus, but of the elements he scolds. I've often wondered what caused those winds anyway? Were they just doing wind things and happened to encounter the Son of God in their midst? Or was someone else behind that storm... hoping to wreak havoc and disrupt the calm of his ministry? Were there forces even stronger than the natural course of weather at work? (Another question to ask God when I see Him.) Underneath all that though, seems to be an episode from the three stooges... terrified disciples bailing away, Jesus sleeping peacefully on a cushion, the wind howling, boat rocking... did they really think Jesus was going to sink to his death sleeping soundly in the stern? Sounds like more than a little repressed resentment was evident in their opening words to wake him... "don't you care if we drown?" No "help me, help me!" but "don't you care?"

Jesus is right to chide them. They will find out only later how very much he cares.

  • The visual imagery is vivid, isn't it CJ? I liked that too. And, like you, I wondered if there weren't some demonic forces behind it all...we'll be able to find out once we are there! :)

I like your thoughts on "dont you care" in leiu of "help me"

  • CJ, I love that you looked at it like it was the enemy causing the wind to blow about his ministry. There's something I never thought of. I just assumed God got the waves rolling so Jesus could calm the winds in front of the disciples. Either way, it's hard not to remember that at this point, the disciples still weren't sure that who they were walking with was really their savior. Great teacher. Cool prophet. Someone who had a grasp for magic and healing. But I think this is when they first started to understand He was SO much more than all of that...
